"billie eilish: the world's a little blurry"
From singing in her childhood room to winning five Grammy's her first time nominated, Billie Eilish has become one of the biggest artists in the world.
Born December 18, 2001 in Los Angeles, California, Eilish and her brother Finneas have been making music in their childhood home ever since they were young.
After watching Billie Eilish: The World's a Little Blurry" I have come to love Billie Eilish even more than I already did. The documentary opens up Eilish singing "Ocean Eyes" at the age of 13 in what looks like her garage, which later leads into her hearing the song on the radio for the first time.
Throughout the film, we see lots of footage from the pop star's different tours and shows. In one of the first clips we hear someone in the crowd of one of her shows say someone is hurt. She gets off stage and tells the crowd to make room for the girl and when she is carried away by security or medics, Billie says "she's okay" and this just goes to show that she truly cares about her fans, though she does not see them as her fans but rather her friends and people who have saved her.
Growing up, she was always surrounded by music. Her mother, Maggie Baird, was a songwriter and inspired Billie to write and her father, Patrick O'Connell, taught her how to play various instruments. Her parents were always supportive of her no matter where life was going to take her. As Billie says, her parents never forced her to do anything she did not want to do and did not force her to continue with music if she was not happy with it.
Her brother, Finneas, is her right hand and go to. He and Billie would sit in his childhood room and record their music and write songs, as they still do today. Billie still lives at home with her parents in the house she grew up in even though she is a millionaire who can definitely afford to live on her own. The roots will always remain and it is literally the house that built her.
Billie kept a journal with all these different notes and images to go with her songs and thoughts and one of the most notable ones was of her talking about her vision for the music video of "When the Party's Over." She talks about wanting to drink black liquid and then it starts to pour out of her eyes like tears. Everything else around her is white, her clothing, the walls, so the black really stands out and captures the moment. This video currently has 671 million views on YouTube.
The Los Angeles native opens up about her struggles with depression, anxiety and Tourettes. While we see a happy, pumped up Billie on stage, there is more than what meets the eye. When she gets back to her dressing room, she has her moments about what could have gone better in her show or even her relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Brandon Quention Adams, also known as 7:AMP. It was days before Valentine's Day and she was asked if her boyfriend has done anything for her and her response was, "Haven't gotten anything. And the night before, he'd been really weird and distant and sh**." This all later turned into a breakup because the two were not going down the same paths and wanted different things in their lives at the moment.
But, nothing shows commitment like the time Billie was jumping so hard at one of her shows that she got major shin splints and could not even walk on her own. You know what she did? At the next show, she said that she should not be jumping around but she will do it anyways because she wants to give her fans the show they deserve to see. Eventually, this would lead to an injury that would cause her to run off stage and question whether or not she could continue a show. During her show in Milan, Italy, Billie was jumping and sprained her ankle. She got off stage and put a boot on and tried to continue the show but became too emotional and ran off. She felt bad that she was not going to give the audience what they deserved which was a crazy pump up show. Her crew was encouraging her that the crowd will accept anything they get from her because they were there to see her and enjoy her show. Billie finally comes back out on stage and gives a great performance.
We do see the struggles she faces with becoming famous and well known at a young age. She is very self conscious about what she posts on her social medias and reads the comments on her posts. Being a teenager, this can affect you a ton. She once received a comment stating that she was rude and unwelcoming to her fans who wanted to take a picture with her. She was just having a bad day and said she was not in the mood to take pictures with people, which is understandable. Touring around the world and never having time for yourself can be a lot, especially at the age she is.
There was something not mentioned in the film that I would like to acknowledge about Billie. She does interviews with Vogue every year, on the same date. She gets asked the same questions and they edit it to show her previous answers and looks. I really love this about her and her career because we get to see how truly far she has come as an artist. Her first interview you can see she was somewhat sad and depressed, but her most recent one in 2020, she seems much happier and loving her life. She got her dream car, which is a matte black Dodge Challenger, she got a new puppy, and so many more Instagram followers.
The young star is only 19 years old and has so much more to accomplish with a career that has already taken off like a rocket. As a huge fan, I hope she continues to make music for many years to come and does not lose sight of who she is.
